The Politics of Identity on the Edge

Comment Policy

I really prefer to have productive discussions here and will err on the side of allowing conversation rather than removing comments. However, I will not hesitate to shut down dialog that is hurtful and unproductive. It’s always going to be a judgment call but here are some general guidelines
 • Do not use derogatory slurs as a negative, this includes “whore,” “lame,” “shemale,” etc.
 • Do not intentionally misgender a trans person – or any person for that matter. Even if it’s “revenge” for something they did. There’s rarely enough information on the internet to form a claim to know someone’s gender better than they do. And even if you think this is such a case — take it elsewhere. I take this very seriously.
 • Do not disparage an oppressed population. It’s one thing to say that all democrats are stupid, the impact is far different to say that all people of color are. If you have a problem with an individual, focus on them and not the oppressed population they belong to.
 • Do not assume someone’s perspective based on an identity they hold or disparage them for it. You cannot presume to know someone based on their identity language. This is especially true when relying on subtle variations in language that may be different in different geographical regions (ex: transgender and transsexual). Note: this is different from telling a person that they don’t understand a type of oppression they haven’t experienced.
Anti-Spam Policy
Having just now waded through 187 spam comments, I realized this might be helpful. If you leave a link in your comment it will automatically be held in moderation and I don’t guarantee that I’ll get to it in a timely manner. One line comments with links back to your website may be mistaken as spam, as that is a tactic many spammers are using now – with the website url going back to a commercial site. Saying something that makes it clear you’ve read the post and not just something generic (“Good point” or “I hadn’t thought of that”) will help me distinguish between your comment and this more sophisticated spam.
